Before you cook a TikTok recipe: a 7-point checklist

Updated 19 October 2026 · 2 min read

Short answer

Before cooking a viral recipe, confirm the amounts, pan size, oven temperature, timing, any ingredient swaps, the servings and food safety basics. Saving the recipe in Recepti first puts the ingredients and steps in front of you so the checks take two minutes.

Short videos cut out the boring parts. Those are often the parts that make a recipe work. These checks take a couple of minutes.

The checklist

  1. Amounts. Do you have a number for every ingredient? Write in your own for "a splash" or "some".
  2. Pan size. A smaller pan means deeper food and longer cooking.
  3. Oven temperature. Confirm °F or °C. 350 in a °C oven is not a thing.
  4. Time and doneness. Look for a doneness cue like golden edges or a set center, not just minutes.
  5. Swaps. If the creator uses a brand or ingredient you do not have, decide the swap before you shop.
  6. Servings. Scale before you shop, not halfway through.
  7. Food safety. Chicken, pork and eggs need proper cooking whatever the video shows.

Make the checks easy

Import the video into Recepti first. You get a written list to check against, a servings control, and the original video one tap away.

Questions

Why do viral recipes fail so often?

Usually because a detail was skipped in the edit: an amount, a resting time or a pan size.

Should I halve a recipe the first time?

For baking, halving is fine for most recipes but watch the pan size and time. See scaling recipes.
